Jakarta

Where To Stay Where To Eat Where To Drink What To Do Where To Shop

A city of dizzying contrasts, Jakarta juggles its traditions and deep spiritual core with fast-paced urban life

Indonesia’s energetic capital is fast shaking off its gritty image to become a world-class destination for arts and culture. It’s home to some of Southeast Asia’s most exciting art scenes, where promising local talent and international veterans, esteemed art collectors and dealers convene.

Not only that, the sprawling city is packed with a mind-boggling array of food options, from gritty street food vendors to luxury fine-dining restaurants, where tourists can sample flavours from across the archipelago.

City at a glance: Indonesia's dynamic capital is a vibrant metropolis where gleaming skyscrapers, historic neighbourhoods and a diverse culinary scene come together.

Weather: Jakarta has a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round, averaging 26-32°C. The dry season runs from May to September, while the wet season typically lasts from October to April.

From the airport: Jakarta's city centre is around 30-60 minutes from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, depending on traffic. Airport taxis, Grab and Gojek are readily available, while the Airport Rail Link offers a fast connection to the city.

Getting around: Traffic can be heavy, so allow extra travel time. Ride-hailing apps such as Grab and Gojek are the easiest way to get around, while the MRT and TransJakarta bus network are convenient for selected routes.

Day trips: Escape the city's bustle with a day trip to the historic old town of Bogor and its famed Botanical Gardens, or head to the Thousand Islands (Kepulauan Seribu) for white-sand beaches, snorkelling and island-hopping.

Language: Bahasa Indonesia is the official language, though English is commonly spoken in hotels, shopping malls and tourist areas.

Local etiquette: Dress modestly when visiting places of worship, remove your shoes before entering homes or certain religious sites, and use your right hand when giving or receiving items.

Shopping hours: Most shopping malls are open daily from around 10am to 10pm, while traditional markets typically open earlier and close by late afternoon.

Tipping: Tipping is appreciated but not obligatory. Many restaurants add a service charge, but it's common to leave a small tip for good service if one isn't included.
