Forget toiling on a treadmill. Gyms are offering engaging new workouts – from surfing (sans water) to circuit training in an arcade-like setting

1. AG6 Workout, New York

Take on a challenge with a circuit class in a fast-paced, arcade-like environment at New York City’s Asphalt Green. Its 45-minute AG6 workout has participants reacting to LED light cues while squatting, planking and lunging across a touch-sensitive floor.

2. The Trip, Auckland

For a spin class with edge, try Les Mills’ The Trip in Auckland. Pedal on a stationary bike in front of a large screen displaying images of futuristic cities, set to pulsating electronic music and ambient lighting.

3. Jumping Fitness, Prague

Jump, kick and run on individual trampolines at Jumping Fitness in Prague, where this quirky workout originated. The gym also holds trampoline workout parties led by peppy instructors and live DJs.

4. Surfset, London

Far from tropical beaches, Londoners can achieve the muscular body of a surfer with Gymbox’s Surfset workout. Participants balance on surfboards and mimic lunging, jumping and paddling motions – as if they are riding real waves.

5. Bey Dance, Melbourne

Who doesn’t want to slay like Beyonce? In Melbourne, Bey Dance holds classes where attendees in checked shirts practise dance moves from the superstar’s music videos. Calling all single ladies!

6. The Pound, Los Angeles

Over at Crunch Gym in Los Angeles, rock out by hitting the ground and air with weighted drumsticks while keeping in time with catchy rhythms. The Pound workout engages the whole body by incorporating pilates and cardio.
