The 62nd Grammy Awards will be held in Los Angeles on 26 January. Here’s what to know about the history of the extravaganza

1959

The very first ceremony is held in two locations – in Beverly Hills and New York City – with 28 prizes given out in total.

1971

The awards are televised live for the first time, with ABC buying the rights to the telecast.

1975

Aretha Franklin wins Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for the eighth consecutive year. To date, she holds the record for the most consecutive Grammys in the same category.

1997

At 14, LeAnn Rimes wins Best New Artist and Best Female Country Vocal Performance – the youngest individual winner ever.

2020

Links to streaming services such as Spotify will now be accepted as submissions (in lieu of traditional CDs) – a mark of the changing music industry.
