The anticipated reserve aims to conserve and protect its environment
In 2021, Shanghai will be home to the 175,000m2 Shanghai Yangtze River Estuary Nature Preserve designed by Ennead Architects. The bioreserve aims to rescue critically endangered species, restore biodiversity and raise public awareness on ecological conservation
1. 754,040m3
Volume of water contained in the Yangtze River Estuary Nature Preserve’s 32 pools. This complex system has been designed to mimic the river basin’s micro-ecosystems to facilitate the endangered species’ re-integration into the wild.
2. 24,200m²
Combined surface area of the building’s undulating roof. The timber structure is clad in translucent fluoropolymer which ensures that maximum daylight reaches the pools.
3. ~50
Number of endangered finless porpoises to be protected, alongside 100 tonnes of Chinese Yangtze River sturgeon in the Yangtze River Estuary Nature Preserve. Fun fact: the finless porpoise is the only porpoise species without a true dorsal fin.
