Heading somewhere sunny? Learn how to choose and apply sunscreen, understand SPF and UVA protection, and protect your skin on a tropical holiday

September is here. And, if you have yet to take a proper break this year, consider this your cue to use those annual leave days.

Singapore Airlines can take you straight to the beaches of Bali and Phuket, the coastline of Danang or the islands of the Maldives, where swimming, snorkelling and long days outdoors offer a welcome change from desks and air-conditioned spaces. After all, The World Health Organization notes that time in natural environments can support mental wellbeing and encourage physical activity and relaxation.

There is just one thing to be mindful of while enjoying all that time outdoors: the sun.

UV exposure goes beyond the beach

Tropical UV levels can remain high throughout the year, while sand and water can reflect UV rays. Some UV can penetrate the water’s surface. In other words, swimming and snorkelling do not necessarily give your skin a break.

And don’t judge your exposure by how hot it feels. “UV exposure occurs even on overcast days and in cooler weather,” says Dr Rachel Ho, aesthetic doctor and medical director of The Skin Longevity Clinic.

A destination that feels cooler or less humid than Singapore isn’t necessarily gentler on your skin. Sun protection isn’t reserved for days spent in swimwear by the water either.

Warmer climes naturally call for lighter dressing, from sleeveless silhouettes to shorts and breezier layers worn while sightseeing, exploring or dining outdoors.

With more skin exposed, UV protection becomes just as relevant away from the beach.

Decoding the sunscreen label

It’s worth knowing what the numbers and letters on your sunscreen actually mean. SPF primarily measures protection against UVB, the rays responsible for most sunburn and which also contribute to skin cancer.

SPF 30 filters approximately 97 per cent of UVB rays and SPF 50 around 98 per cent when properly applied, Dr Ho explains. For most situations, she says SPF 30 is sufficient, although a higher SPF makes sense if you expect prolonged or particularly strong sun exposure.

UVB is only half the picture. UVA rays penetrate more deeply into the skin and contribute to pigmentation, premature skin ageing and skin cancer. “Broad spectrum” means a sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB.

You may also see a PA rating, particularly on Japanese and South Korean formulas. Short for Protection Grade of UVA, it indicates the level of UVA protection and runs from PA+ to PA++++. Put simply, the more plus signs, the greater the protection.

Don’t skimp on the SPF

Choosing the right sunscreen is one thing. Using it properly is another.

Before heading to the beach or setting off for a morning of island-hopping, apply it generously. “Most people apply far less than the recommended amount,” says Dr Ho, who advises approximately two tablespoons for full-body coverage. Don’t overlook easy-to-miss areas such as the lips, ears, neck and feet.

Then comes the step many people forget: reapplication. Dr Ho recommends topping up every two to three hours when you’re outdoors, and more frequently when water is involved.

If you’ve been swimming or snorkelling, reapply after towelling off and follow the directions on your water-resistant sunscreen. Water-resistant, after all, does not mean waterproof.

The final layer

As for mineral versus chemical sunscreen, there is no need to overthink it. Mineral formulas typically use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide and can be thicker or leave a white cast, while chemical sunscreens tend to feel lighter and more transparent.

Dr Ho’s advice is to choose “the one that you prefer based on your skin type and cosmetic needs so that you’ll apply and reapply sufficiently” – because the best sunscreen for a day spent swimming, sailing or stretched out on the sand is ultimately one you will keep using.

And because “no sunscreen is fail-proof”, add shade, umbrellas, sleeved or UPF clothing and SPF lip balm where practical. Then get on with enjoying the sun, sand and sea.

Ready to pack your beach bag? Here are the sunscreens worth packing for your next tropical escape.

The Energist Multi-Defense Cream SPF 50, Noble Panacea, $535

What it is

A 100 per cent mineral, broad-spectrum SPF 50 that pairs high sun protection with targeted skincare for existing and future signs of photoageing, including fine lines, wrinkles and dark spots.

Its standout feature is Noble Panacea’s light-activated OSMV technology, which uses exposure to UVA and UVB to trigger the controlled release of selected skincare actives. It comes in 60 individually sealed doses, making it especially convenient for travel.

Key ingredients and benefits

  • Ferulic acid: A potent antioxidant that helps defend skin against oxidative stress and photoageing.
  • Tri-peptide: Helps support collagen production and improve the appearance of visible signs of sun damage.
  • Spirulina extract: Helps address the appearance of dark spots and uneven pigmentation while supporting skin repair.
  • Mullein flower extract: Helps give the complexion a more luminous appearance.
  • Moringa seed extract: Helps protect skin against environmental stressors and pollution.
  • OSMV™ technology: Noble Panacea’s patented delivery system controls the release of skincare actives, with this formula using UV exposure to trigger the delivery of selected preventative and corrective ingredients.

Why should you get it for a tropical holiday

If you are serious about skincare and want your holiday SPF to do more than protect against the sun, this is the splurge.

Alongside SPF 50, it targets signs of photoageing while helping defend against further damage, making it particularly useful for long days spent exploring under strong tropical sun.

The individually sealed doses are also handy for travelling: pack what you need rather than carrying another full-sized bottle, with each dose keeping the formula protected until you are ready to use it.

The fast-absorbing, non-greasy finish is another plus when heat and humidity are already working against you.

Available at Noble Panacea at TANGS at Tang Plaza. Online at Noble Panacea and krisshop.com.

Its up-to-12-hour shine control helps keep excess sheen at bay, while the pore-blurring finish doubles as a primer if you plan on wearing makeup. Think sightseeing, outdoor lunches and long days exploring when you want your SPF to leave skin looking polished rather than progressively shinier.

Key ingredients and benefits

  • Zinc oxide: A mineral UV filter that provides broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection.

Ceramides, niacinamide and other hydrating ingredients also help support skin that is constantly moving between tropical heat and drying air-conditioning.

This is built for a day that covers all of the above, combining high UV protection with blue light and pollution defence, antioxidants and lasting hydration. A strong all-rounder when your skin is exposed to more than sunshine alone.

UV Defense Essence Gel N, Sekkisei, $33

What it is

A refreshing face-and-body gel sunscreen built for hot, wet conditions.

Its defining feature is a water-holding shield ingredient that reacts to sweat and water, swelling within the sunscreen film so the protective veil becomes stronger rather than simply wearing down.

The finish is lightweight, non-sticky and designed to sit comfortably on skin even in humidity.

Key ingredients and benefits

  • Water-holding shield ingredient: Reacts to sweat and water to reinforce the UV film, helping protection hold up through swimming, perspiration and long stretches outdoors.
  • Three types of Job’s tears: Japanese Job’s tears extract, fermented Job’s tears extract and Job’s tears water help replenish moisture and support clearer-looking skin.
  • Plum vinegar extract: Provides antioxidant and moisturising benefits to help support skin exposed to strong sun.

  • Indigo extract: Adds further antioxidant support.
  • Clarity Powder: Gives skin an immediate brighter, more radiant appearance without turning the formula into a tone-up sunscreen.

  • Airborne-particle protection: Helps shield skin from pollen, PM2.5, dirt and dust.

Why should you get it for a tropical holiday

This is the one for beach days, boat trips and island-hopping. Instead of treating sweat and water as something your sunscreen needs to withstand, Sekkisei puts them to work.

It’s a clever bit of synergy for tropical holidays, where the elements become part of how the formula performs. And despite its super-waterproof credentials, the gel feels refreshingly light and non-sticky, making repeat applications throughout the day that much easier.

  • Buriti oil: A carotene-rich antioxidant oil that helps protect against visible damage caused by sun exposure.

Why should you get it for a tropical holiday

This pairs SPF50 with lasting hydration, antioxidants and TFC8 to address both sides of the equation: protecting skin from further sun damage while supporting its condition and visible signs of ageing.

The lightweight, fast-absorbing texture makes its nourishing formula a good fit for the tropics, delivering hydration and antioxidant support without feeling rich or heavy on the skin.

The beige tint helps even and brighten the complexion without an obvious tone-up effect, while its primer function helps makeup stay put for up to 12 hours – useful when a day outdoors leads straight into dinner.

It also keeps skin moisturised for up to 24 hours, helping it stay comfortable as you move between the heat and humidity outdoors and air-conditioned hotels, restaurants and malls.

Anessa Perfect UV Brush-On Powder SPF50+ PA++++ with built-in brush

Perfect UV Brush-On Powder SPF 50+ PA++++, Anessa, $51

What it is

A handbag-friendly SPF50+ PA++++ powder made for one of sunscreen’s least glamorous moments: reapplication. The built-in brush lets you sweep on protection over makeup while taking down shine, leaving the complexion fresh rather than cakey or greasy.

Key ingredients and benefits

  • Powder-format UV protection: Makes SPF top-ups easier without having to disturb the rest of your makeup.
  • 12-hour oil control: Helps keep excess shine in check through hot, humid weather.
  • Eight-hour moisturising effect: Keeps the finish from feeling overly dry despite its mattifying benefits.
  • Anti-friction formula: Helps the powder wear more comfortably through movement and rubbing.
  • Water resistance: Adds resilience when exposed to moisture.
  • Microparticle protection: Helps shield the skin from airborne micro-dust.
  • Non-comedogenic formula: Designed not to clog pores.

Why should you get it for a tropical holiday

This is the one you keep in your bag, not your bathroom. Tropical days have a way of turning even the most polished morning face shiny by lunchtime, and reapplying a cream or lotion over makeup is not always realistic.

A few sweeps of this lets you refresh SPF, mattify and tidy up your complexion in one go, which is especially useful between sightseeing, lunch and whatever comes next.

Tip: Use it as a top-up over your regular sunscreen, rather than relying on powder alone for your initial morning protection.

Available at selected Watsons, Welcia, FairPrice, Unity and Don Don Donki stores, Watsons online,  Shopee and Lazada.

Why should you get it for a tropical holiday

Sweat and water cause its protective veil to form a gel that adheres more closely to the skin, while its very water-resistant finish stands up to seawater, pool water and sebum.

Despite its staying power, it has a light, essence-like texture, while DECORTÉ’s technology allows beneficial red light to pass through to support skin renewal.
