Beyond the layover: Why Zurich deserves a few more days

With its lake, mountains and world class galleries on its doorstep, Switzerland’s largest city rewards those who stay a few days longer

Zürich is more than efficient. Just 10 minutes from the airport, culture, lifestyle and real life collide. Lakeside calm meets urban buzz, old masters meet modern galleries, food and mountains within reach, all inside a compact, walkable centre. A few days here reveal a city built for lingering, well beyond the layover.

A city of layers

Zürich’s cultural depth spans the Kunsthaus Zürich’s old masters, French Impressionists and digital art, alongside more than 50 museums and 100 galleries. An evening might begin at the Opera House and end at Widder Bar, or over dinner at Restaurant Drei Stuben, where tradition meets a contemporary menu.

The setting helps too: a lakeside walk to Zürichhorn passes the colourful Pavillon Le Corbusier, designed by the Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier, and a short boat cruise from Burkliplatz reaches Kilchberg’s Lindt Home of Chocolate. The 20-minute train ride to Uetliberg reveals views over the city, lake and Alps.

The creative west

Zürich-West is a former industrial district turned hub for contemporary art, design, food and architecture. Old factories now house galleries and studios, and the Freitag Tower is built from rusted shipping containers. Sample flavours at the Market Hall or relax at Frau Gerolds Garten with the after-work crowd.

The Old Town

This is where the city’s older character blends with independent boutiques and cosy cafés along Niederdorf’s winding, cobbled lanes, selling handmade fashion and one-of-a-kind jewellery, while Berg und Tal stocks artisan food from small Swiss producers.

Stay a few days and Zürich reveals itself as more than Switzerland’s gateway. It is a destination in its own right, with the rest of the country just a train ride away.

Discover more with the Zürich Card, covering unlimited public transport and entry to the city’s top museums. Visit zuerich.com to plan your stay.
