Dedicated to serving others – both in and out of uniform

As a Leading Stewardess with Singapore Airlines, Christine Lim has an unwavering commitment to service. Even when she’s not donning the kebaya, the 34-year-old demonstrates a strong desire to help others, regularly participating in volunteering activities to give back to the community.

Christine often volunteers at food banks and soup kitchens including THK Meals on Wheels, Food from the Heart and Willing Hearts. At these centres, her tasks range from food preparation and packing to interacting with the elderly.

“Singapore Airlines has taught us the importance of giving back. I am proud to be a part of an organisation that has remained steadfast in its commitment to environmental and social objectives,” Christine reflects. “Employees are given time off to support various charitable causes, and I love how this contributes to the airline’s aim of making a positive impact beyond the realm of air travel.”

Outside of work, Christine regularly participates in grassroots activities, assisting underprivileged families in her local community with their day-to-day issues. “Generosity is contagious and can often inspire others to follow suit. While I am still young and able to participate in volunteering activities, I want to do my best to make these efforts count,” she says.

Christine’s volunteerism has profoundly influenced her service delivery on board. “Volunteering has taught me the importance of empathy and how to better keep an eye out for those in need,” she shares. “Plus, it warms my heart when I am able to reach out to people and make them feel like I am there for them, no matter what they are going through.”

As a case in point, she recalls once meeting a mother who was travelling with a child with autism. “My fellow cabin crew members and I kept a special lookout for both of them throughout the flight. At one point, the mother fell asleep and the child wandered off on his own on the Airbus A380 aircraft. I spotted him while we were making our rounds in the cabin, and thankfully, we managed to calm him down,” she remembers. “The grateful mother gave me the sweetest handwritten note after the flight, which I have kept with me till this day.”

Besides empathy and service, Christine has learnt many other life skills with Singapore Airlines. “Flying has shaped me so much as a person! The top three things I have learnt on the job are interpersonal skills, adaptability and most importantly, time management,” she reflects.

Christine is also committed to expanding her knowledge. Besides pursuing an MBA while working full-time, she has also picked up German and enrolled in various wine courses as part of Singapore Airlines’ air sommelier programme. “I love how Singapore Airlines fosters a culture of continuous learning and provides many avenues for that,” she says.

The frequent travel that comes with her role has also broadened her horizons immensely. “As a cabin crew member with Singapore Airlines, I get to experience first-hand what other cultures are like, meet many people from all walks of life and work alongside colleagues from different backgrounds. Of course, I also get to enjoy our nation’s favourite pastime – savouring diverse cuisines across the globe!” she says.

When it comes to her favourite destinations, Christine has a soft spot for Europe in particular. “I’m in awe of its sophistication, rich history, food, nature, culture and art. Flying for an airline with such an extensive network, the world is truly your oyster,” she enthuses. “But the best part about being a cabin crew member? I get to see our planet from a bird’s-eye view almost on a daily basis, which has helped shape my perspective on life.”
