For a closer look at Bali‘s enduring craft traditions, venture beyond the boutiques and into their workshops.
At John Hardy‘s Kapal Bamboo Boutique and Artisan Workshop, visitors can watch master artisans transform raw materials into handcrafted jewellery, gaining a deeper appreciation for the skill behind the brand’s designs.
Together with the Seminyak boutique, the experience offers a journey from craftsmanship to finished creation, rooted in the island’s rich artisanal heritage.
Don’t miss this
At the Seminyak boutique, the Icon Chain Masterclass offers a close look at the brand’s signature chain-weaving technique. Guided by a master artisan, participants assemble, weave and finish each link by hand before polishing the final piece.
The three-hour session concludes with lunch at The Long Table Restaurant & Bar and a personalised Icon Chain bracelet engraved with initials. Priced from IDR20,300,000 (approximately S$1,452) per person, reservations are required at least two working days in advance.
Those interested in a broader introduction to jewellery-making should head to the Kapal Bamboo Boutique & Artisan Workshop near Ubud. The four-hour Immersion Jewellery Masterclass guides participants through design sketching, watercolour rendering, wax carving and chain weaving, alongside tours of the archives and artisan workshop. Available on weekdays from IDR4,000,000 (approximately S$335) per person, the experience also includes lunch, dining credits at The Long Table and a boutique gift card redeemable on the day of the class.
For a more personalised experience, the Jewellery Customisation Masterclass pairs guests with a master artisan to develop a bespoke piece from concept to completion. Participants are guided through the creative process before their final design is handcrafted and delivered within eight to 12 weeks. Prices vary depending on the chosen design, with custom pieces ranging from IDR5,400,000 (approximately S$385) to IDR23,900,000 (approximately S$1,703).
Those short on time can still explore the Kapal Bamboo Artisan Workshop through complimentary workshop tours, which offer a glimpse into the craftsmanship behind the brand at no cost.
Why visit
Few luxury brands remain as closely tied to their place of origin as John Hardy. More than 50 years on, production remains rooted in Bali, with local artisans continuing to use traditional techniques passed down through generations.
The workshops offer a rare view into that world, bringing visitors into direct contact with the craft and the people behind it. Alongside this, the brand’s focus on environmental responsibility and community support reflects an approach to luxury shaped as much by values as by design.
