Discover the Copenhagen studios redefining Danish design

Step inside Copenhagen Airport and Danish design is immediately on display, from the furniture to the architecture – a fitting introduction to a capital that has evolved into a global design destination.

Icons such as Arne Jacobsen, Finn Juhl, Hans J. Wegner and Poul Henningsen helped define the Danish Modern movement, and their legacy lives on at Illums Bolighus, Copenhagen’s legendary department store – a one-stop destination for the best of Danish design.

Today, a new generation continues to push Danish design forward. Visit in June for Copenhagen’s annual 3daysofdesign festival, or explore at a slower pace during the shoulder months of May and September.

Founded in 2006, Københavns Møbelsnedkeri hand-crafts its collections in Copenhagen, specialising in bespoke kitchens, bathrooms, wardrobes and furniture, alongside thoughtfully designed everyday objects. The studio combines traditional cabinetmaking with Japanese-inspired joinery and signature solid brass detailing.

Standout pieces include its Axiom Audio stereos in Scandinavian solid wood, the Mondrian-inspired Composition kitchen, and the Chess Family table lamps.

View the collections at the brand’s by-appointment gallery in the Islands Brygge waterfront district, where rotating exhibitions and installations showcase designs that are largely available for purchase.

After visiting Designmuseum Danmark, stroll along Bredgade in Frederiksstaden, one of Copenhagen’s premier design boulevards, lined with leading furniture makers, galleries and showrooms. Among them is Helle Mardahl Studio, whose colourful entrance hints at the playful world within.

Inside, understated interiors keep the spotlight on the designer’s vibrant mouth-blown glass creations, inspired by sweets and confectionery.

The brainchild of Copenhagen-based brand strategist Kasia Sznajder and art director Fred Aartun, Aarticles is part gallery, part archive and part marketplace, celebrating contemporary and found objects with lasting value. Alongside found pieces are works by Danish and international designers, inviting visitors to engage with meaningful design through material, craftsmanship and time.

Its new showroom is just a short stroll away from the iconic Nyhavn district, and features a global mix of makers that include Copenhagen-based practice Christian+Jade, Seoul-based artist Yeodong Yun, Los Angeles jeweller J. Hannah, and Paris-based ceramicist Sharlen Nozawa. With new commissions and rotating collections, there’s always something to discover.

Discover Frama’s latest furniture, lighting and lifestyle collections within its Studio Store, housed in the historic St. Pauls Apotek. Warm timber interiors and earthy tones create a calming setting for exploring home fragrances, self-care products and regular exhibitions, alongside the brand’s thoughtfully curated designs.

More than a showroom, the space is also home to Apotek 57, the brand’s farm-to-table bakery and eatery. Chef Chiara Barla’s ever-changing menu celebrates seasonal ingredients through daily house-made dishes and freshly baked pastries.

Explore candle maker Kunstindustrien’s new flagship store in Rosengård, a design district within Copenhagen’s historic city centre. Here, handcrafted candles made from high-quality raw materials are designed for a clean, low-soot burn, including collections crafted from 100 per cent stearin.

Don’t miss the brand’s best-selling December advent candles, which count down the days to Christmas, or its innovative olive wax collection, made entirely from by-products of olive oil production.

Afterwards, stop by nearby Conditori La Glace – Denmark’s oldest patisserie – for a well-earned coffee and pastry.
