While it’s best known for hosting the Championships, there’s plenty more to see and do in this affluent southwest London neighbourhood
In 2022 from 27 June to 10 July, the world’s oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament will return to the All England Club in southwest London for two weeks of match point action. If you have plans to head to Wimbledon for this celebrated event, or might be passing by sooner, check out these ace spots nearby.
1. The White Onion
This inviting restaurant turns seasonal British produce into modern European fare like oven-baked Brixham scallops; fillet of Cornish cod with artichokes and crispy tapioca; and cured New Forest duck eggs with confit duck leg rillettes. With its white marble bar and beautiful skylight, it has amassed a faithful following; in fact, its monthly five-course wine pairing dinners often sell out. It’s a mere 15-minute stroll from the All England Club, so reservations during the tournament are essential.
2. Wat Buddhapadipa
Inaugurated by the King and Queen of Thailand in 1966 and originally situated in Richmond, this temple and monastery moved to its present location 10 years later. The traditional white structure, with its striking gold gilding and red roof, sits on four manicured acres surrounded by flower gardens, meditative walking trails and an ornamental pond. Inside, colourful murals depict scenes from the Buddha’s life. Come by for regular meditation classes, silent retreats and Thai cultural festivals.
3. Merton Abbey Mills
This converted 18th-century textile factory is located on the site of Merton Priory, which was an important monastery and centre of learning during the Middle Ages. Today, it houses a food hall, restaurants, bars, bakeries, a Grade II-listed theatre, as well as the Wheelhouse pottery workshop and gallery. The latter dates all the way back to 1885 and for many years was the printworks of London’s famous Liberty department store. It is now the only hydroelectric potter’s wheel in the country and is open to visitors every weekend.
4. Hemingways Lounge Bar
Wimbledon Village’s only locally owned and independently operated cocktail lounge is an establishment that could have been after the legendary writer’s heart. Outside, there’s sidewalk seating for people-watching on a sunny day; indoors, you’ll find velvet green banquettes perfect for intimate conversations. Sip on a whiskey sour infused with pomegranate, basil or lavender, or share cocktail punch bowls served in vessels shaped like top hats and Wellington boots. You can opt to takeaway your cocktail, or stick around for live music, karaoke and DJ nights.
5. Wimbledon Common
With over 400 hectares of mostly untamed woodland and boggy grassland, this green space ranks as London’s largest common. There are several foot and cycle paths, as well as horse riding trails, along which you can spot various types of wildlife. Thirty species of butterflies and 10 species of bats live here alongside badgers, foxes and rabbits, not to mention the turtles, toads and fish splashing about in the common’s nine ponds. Get sporty on the playing fields and golf course, or check out the iconic Dutch-style windmill, which houses a museum featuring exhibits on milling and local history.
