With its gleaming skyscrapers, it’s hard to picture Dubai as a sleepy backwater in the ’60s. But you can relive its days of yore at Al Fanar, which dishes up authentic Emirati fare like machboos deyay (chicken cooked with yellow rice) in a setting that’s reminiscent of a traditional Bedouin village.
5. 1950s: Poppies, London
At this old-school chippy, waitstaff in nautical outfits serve up battered cod and wholetail scampi, which diners can enjoy at Formica tables while listening to tunes from the corner jukebox.
