A sense of nostalgia meets a luxurious style at Copenhagen's Hotel Sanders

1. A contemporary redesign

Situated behind the Royal Danish Theatre, and owned by former ballet dancer Alexander Kølpin, the heritage building that Hotel Sanders lives in was built in 1869. It was overhauled in 2017 by design studio LIND + ALMOND, who stripped away everything but the walls and the old elevator.

2. Personality and opulence

The hotel’s nostalgic interiors are an ode to both the dazzle of theatre and the golden age of travel. The lobby features a rare Carlo Scarpa Murano chandelier, and you’ll find woven rugs, bamboo and wicker seats, vintage trinkets and signed ballerina portraits in the public areas – plus a nod to the stage via the subtle red accents of the bar’s drapes.

3. Rooms with lush textures

Rooms feature a warm colour palette of neutral greens and golds, and come equipped with rattan headboards, industrial-style lamps and wooden cabinets with leather tops. The cabin-inspired Coupé rooms recall the cosy luxury of bygone Oriental Express dwellings.

4. A space that tantalises the senses

A scent created specifically for the hotel, with notes of sandalwood, lingers in the air from the moment you set foot in the lobby, and tall candles are placed throughout the public areas. In terms of dining options, guests can head to Sanders Kitchen for waffles and blueberries or shakshuka by day; and burrata, oysters and an extensive a la carte menu by night. For a nightcap, make your way to the street-facing cocktail bar TATA  – named after the moniker bestowed upon the red curtain of the Royal Danish Theatre – where you’ll find white-tuxedoed bartenders whipping up classic libations.

You can easily access many of the city's attractions from the hotel

5. An enchanting locale

Hotel Sanders’ central location puts guests within easy reach of many of the city’s attractions. Besides catching a show at the Royal Danish Theatre, you can also take a wander around the historic and colourful Nyhavn harbour, which lies parallel to the hotel. Alternatively, explore the nearby Charlottenborg Palace, the 17th century palace that now houses the city’s finest contemporary art museum, or borrow one of the hotel’s bikes and take a ride to the Danish royal family’s residence, Amalienborg Palace.
