The iconic five-star hotel gets a modern update, with a new wing dreamt up by renowned Belgian interior designer Axel Vervoordt

1. A new wing with a markedly different aesthetic

Axel Vervoordt’s signature style is on display in the polished new wing of the Bayerischer Hof. The spacious rooms feature natural materials and neutral colours; think Valverde stone flooring in the bathrooms, antique wooden furniture and linen covers on the sofas. It’s a far cry from the classical opulence of the rest of the hotel, but owner Innegrit Volkhardt already has plans to modernise the entire building.

2. Munich’s only three-Michelin-starred restaurant

Vervoordt also designed the hotel’s lauded restaurant, Atelier, which is headed by chef Jan Hartwig. Reserve a table well in advance to enjoy Hartwig’s seasonal, regional dishes such as Bavarian trout with sunflower seeds, parsnip, calf’s head, chives and buttermilk.

3. A private cinema screening the latest blockbusters

The hotel’s plush cinema – once again designed by Vervoordt – seats 38 on comfy oversized sofas. It screens both English and German movies in their original language.

4. A pool with a view

The seventh-floor spa’s pièce de résistance is its pool, which provides swimmers with vistas of Munich’s most beautiful buildings, including the imposing Frauenkirche cathedral and the neo-Gothic town hall.

5. A jaw-dropping penthouse suite

The new wing also sees the arrival of a plush 350m2 penthouse suite, which costs a cool €15,000 a night. The lofty space embraces the Japanese wabi-sabi philosophy and features one-of-a-kind lamps by ceramic artist Kosi Hidama, a gym, a sauna, a wraparound terrace and an outdoor tub.
