Where to party in the hometown of Jimi Hendrix, Pearl Jam and Nirvana
The Seattle music scene has been thriving for decades and people have flocked from all over the US to be part of it. Steven Severin, co-owner of music-venue Neumos, proudly boasts it as the greatest city for music. As far as the city’s best neighbourhood to explore for great beats? Severin picks Capitol Hill as the epicentre. “The corner of 10th and Pike is probably the busiest corner in the state. In the area, you can check out local bands, national acts, spoken word, independent theatre and movies, art galleries and eat anything from Malaysian fare to burgers – then follow it up in a bar serving up interesting cocktails and fantastic music.” Here are three venues to visit for great tunes.
1. Neumos
From trivia nights to dance parties to sets by big-name bands, Neumos hosts a vast array of night-time entertainment. The small venue has hosted superstars such as Diplo, Vampire Weekend and Damian Marley and is almost always packed to capacity.

2. Barboza
Beneath Neumos, this tiny basement bar is a local’s fave for discovering new bands or hearing a famous artists in an intimate space. On the weekend, stick around after the bands to groove to hip-hop and pop.

3. Life On Mars
This bar’s ’70s theme extends from the furniture to the giant selection of records, which guests can pick for the DJ to play. Pair your booze and tunes with food from the vegan menu.

Musician to note: Chong the Nomad
The 23-year-old, Seattle-based Chong (Alda Agustiano) has established herself on the local scene thanks to her pop-infused electronica. Check out her exciting collaboration with Singapore Airlines from September 2019.
