Singaporeans to receive tourism credits for a “Singapoliday”

The Singapore government is injecting S$320 million in the form of tourism vouchers to boost the tourism sector

If you’re a Singaporean, you’ll soon be able to rediscover a different side of the city-state you call home with the help of some tourism vouchers. This was announced by Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) Heng Swee Keat in a ministerial statement delivered on 17 August.

DPM Heng said the government will be introducing a S$320m scheme to offer tourism credits to Singaporeans in the form of SingapoRediscovers Vouchers. These vouchers will allow Singaporeans to explore the country’s arts and cultural venues, heritage tours and nature reserves, among others, while international travel is currently on hold.

The news comes after an earlier announcement in July, when the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) launched a nine-month, S$45 million marketing campaign to prop up the industry and support local businesses. The campaign aims to offer value-for-money packages and promotions for local residents to discover hidden gems through staycations and weekend excursions.

The Little Red Dot’s tourism industry has borne the brunt of Covid-19, with borders shut, air travel at a virtual standstill and international tourist arrivals drying up.

“Many Singaporeans love to travel but are unable to do so now. Local consumption will not fully make up for tourist spending, but I hope Singaporeans will take the opportunity to explore our local culture and heritage, nature, art, and architecture,” DPM Heng said. “You may be surprised by what you discover.”

More details will be provided in the coming month.
