A first-of-its-kind immersive attraction, Jiak 99 offers a unique introduction to Singapore’s hawker culture, bringing its stories, traditions and flavours to life through a multi-sensory edutainment experience.

As Singapore’s first hawker heritage centre, Jiak 99 celebrates the nation’s rich hawker culture through an immersive space designed to preserve, share and showcase the stories behind its beloved food traditions.

Visitors can explore the evolution of hawker culture, learn about the pioneers who shaped Singapore’s food scene, and discover the traditions behind iconic dishes through guided heritage tours, interactive exhibits, storytelling sessions and authentic halal food experiences by Muslim-owned vendors.

What to see and do

Jiak 99 offers three tour experiences: the Classic Hawker Experience ($35), the Premium Hawker Experience ($50), and the Premium Hawker Experience + Chef’s Table Workshop of the Day ($75).

The Classic Hawker Experience takes visitors through a series of interactive exhibits exploring how Singapore’s diverse communities have shaped the local culinary landscape.

Along the way, guests can enjoy hands-on displays – including a slide modelled after a traditional local dessert – and take part in quizzes on topics such as Singapore’s coffee culture, after which they will know how to order a kopi c (coffee with evaporated milk) like a local.

Visitors will also create and take home a souvenir, such as a fresh jasmine garland or a Peranakan-inspired tile.

The Premium Hawker Experience includes everything in the Classic tour, along with samples of local dishes served in a tingkat, the traditional tiffin carrier once used to transport home-cooked meals.

For a more hands-on experience, visitors can opt for the Premium Hawker Experience + Chef’s Table Workshop of the Day.

The session includes a cooking workshop where guests learn to prepare popular local snacks such as muah chee (peanut mochi), ondeh-ondeh (glutinous rice flour confections filled with palm sugar and coated in freshly grated coconut), or roti kirai (a lace-like crepe served with curry), before sampling their creations.

Why visit

Singapore’s food culture is best represented through the various local dishes found at hawker centres.

A multicultural melting pot of Chinese, Malay, Indian and other cultures that have evolved from street food culture, Singapore’s hawker culture has been inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

For those who feel hungry after visiting, head for the on-site cafe to try local dishes such as nasi lemak (rice cooked in coconut milk and pandan) and mee siam (rice vermicelli served in a spicy, sweet, and sour gravy).
