At 1947 on Vilakazi Street, you can tuck into traditional South African dishes like pap and vleis (meat and maize meal), the spicy tomato sauce locals call chakalaka, and the famous tripe stew known as mogodu. It’s family-friendly, light on the pocket and always buzzing with activity. And of course, there’s no denying that the historic setting is something special. It’s the only street in the world to have played home to two Nobel Prize winners: Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela. And that’s not to mention the views of Orlando Towers and FNB Stadium – two iconic features of Soweto’s skyline – from upstairs!
