Given the scale of this vast archaeological site just 25km south of central Rome and the quantity and quality of the structures, frescoes and mosaics that remain, it’s surprising that you can enjoy the ruins of ancient Rome’s former seaport without hordes of tourists around. Villas, amphitheatres and the remains of what was probably the world’s first apartment building are all within easy reach of the Metro.
