Set within a working coffee plantation in the cooler highlands of North Bali, Munduk Moding Plantation Nature Resort offers a different way to experience the island.

Surrounded by coffee trees and tropical gardens in Gobleg, the resort looks across forested valleys and mountains towards the northern coastline. Waterfalls, mountain lakes and village life are also within easy reach, making it a well-placed base for travellers keen to explore Bali beyond its beaches.

Wake up in the highlands

Accommodation ranges from spacious Luxury Suites to private One Bedroom Villas with Jacuzzi and Pool Villas with Jacuzzi, each designed to make the most of the plantation setting. Luxury Suites open onto private terraces overlooking the rainforest and valley, while the villas add private outdoor spaces, jacuzzis or pools for those looking for more room and privacy.

Then there are the resort’s award-winning infinity pools, where guests can swim with sweeping views across the mountains towards the distant Java Sea.

There is plenty to do beyond the pool. Guests can start the day with yoga, explore the estate’s coffee and vegetable gardens or cycle through the surrounding neighbourhood. Further afield, the resort can arrange waterfall visits, rainforest treks, traditional canoe trips across Lake Tamblingan and excursions through North Bali’s volcanic landscapes.

Taste, sip and recharge

Coffee is central to the experience. The estate is home to specialty producer Munduk Coffee, giving guests a closer look at the journey from cultivation and harvesting to processing and roasting. Guided plantation tours introduce the varieties grown here, while roasting and cupping sessions explore how different techniques influence the final cup.

The resort’s restaurants also make the most of local flavours and ingredients. MiMPi Restaurant serves Balinese, Indonesian, Asian and international dishes using ingredients from the estate and surrounding area where possible, while Warung Bongkot focuses on North Balinese recipes. Guests can also dine at Rasa Alam, stop by the open-air Bamboo Clubhouse Café or head to Sunset Bar for drinks overlooking the highlands.

After trekking, cycling or a day spent exploring, Bamboo Spa offers traditional massages, body treatments and coffee-inspired rituals, alongside an infrared sauna. Yoga and meditation provide gentler options, while a bamboo gym, tennis and padel facilities cater to those who prefer to stay active.

A stay that gives back

The resort’s approach to sustainability includes organic cultivation, reforestation, biodiversity protection, water conservation and programmes supporting the surrounding community.

Guests can see some of this work first-hand at its Plastic Recycling Centre & Waste Bank, where plastic collected from the property and nearby communities is repurposed into functional objects and artworks. Workshops also offer the chance to create keepsakes using recycled materials.

Why stay

Munduk Moding Plantation brings several sides of North Bali together in one stay: its coffee culture, mountain landscapes, regional food and access to the outdoors.

For travellers looking to venture beyond Bali’s coastal districts, it offers a comfortable base from which to explore the island’s cooler northern highlands – with waterfalls, rainforest and a working coffee plantation on the doorstep.
