Istiqlal Mosque

In the heart of Jakarta lies Southeast Asia's largest mosque

Istiqlal Mosque

Be awed by the sheer scale of the largest mosque in Southeast Asia, which can hold as many as 120,000 worshippers. Opened in 1978, this monument in the heart of the capital is of paramount importance to Indonesia, home to the world’s largest Muslim population. The magnificent structure houses a marble courtyard, a massive prayer hall and a central dome held up by 12 vast pillars. Non-Muslim visitors should be accompanied by a guide as certain spaces are off-limits. The mosque stands across the street from the Jakarta Cathedral — a reflection of then-President Sukarno’s vision of a strong, multi-faith nation.

Opening Hours: Monday to Friday 4am–12pm, Saturday 4am–11pm, closed on Sundays
