Le Marché des Enfants Rouges, which opened in 1615, is the oldest covered market in Paris. It’s named after a former neighbouring orphanage where the children wore red (the colour of Christian charity). These days, it’s a bustling food market offering bento boxes, Lebanese sandwiches, fresh Italian produce and more. Highlights include the fragrant chicken tagine – served with preserved lemons, juicy olives and steaming couscous – at Le Traiteur Marocain and the bacon cheeseburger at Le Burger Fermier des Enfants Rouges. Made with ethically raised meat and topped with sawdust-smoked bacon, locals swear that it’s the best in Paris.
