An old agrarian custom gives this retreat its name: at harvest time, farmers would leave the last fruit on the tree – not out of neglect, but as a gesture of restraint. Opened in April 2026, Shanghai Muh Shoou Zhujing sits around 90 minutes from the city centre in Jinshan District’s Aroma Town, where rice paddies, waterways and woodland paths evoke the rhythms of a traditional Jiangnan water town.
The architecture, a collaboration between GOA, Chunshan Qiushui and Z+T Studio, draws on the local vernacular, with low eaves, deep verandas and courtyard layouts reinterpreted through a contemporary lens. Across nearly 50,000 square metres, just 65 villa suites are scattered among flower fields and cedar forests, each with its own private tea room.
Part of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, the retreat offers a quieter, slower-paced counterpoint to downtown Shanghai.
