Get the lowdown on the city with these fast facts

1. 225

The number of local craftspeople selling their wares annually at Pike Place Market (see above). The famous market has been operating since 1907. Shutterbugs should be sure to get snaps of the massive fish tossed by seafood vendors.

 

2. 724

The length in kilometres of the bike trails in the city. Bicycle-keen visitors should check out the Burke-Gilman Trail, a paved multi-use path that travels 43 kilometres through Seattle and beyond.

3. Five

The number of active volcanoes in Washington State. Of the 20 active volcanoes in the United States, a quarter are located in Washington. All five sit in the Cascade Mountains: Mount St. Helens, Mount Adams, Mount Rainier, Glacier Peak and Mount Baker.

4. Three

The number of national parks near Seattle. Within a day’s drive of Seattle, visitors can access pristine mountain scenery in the Mount Rainier, Olympic and North Cascades national parks.

The approximate number of coffee shops in Seattle. Seattle is the birthplace of Starbucks, and there’s definitely no shortage of independent brewers. Check out the world’s first Starbucks Reserve Roastery and Tasting Room, a coffee-lover’s playground in the Capitol Hill neighbourhood.

6. 193

The length in kilometres of the walking trails in Seattle. Discovery Park is the city’s largest public park and has almost 20km of trails. Forests, beaches, marshes, bluffs and a lighthouse await visitors willing to lace up their walking shoes.

7. 1950

The year Evergreen Point Floating Bridge was built. Officially named the Governor Albert D. Rosellini Bridge, this is the world’s longest floating bridge, spanning 2,350 meters across Lake Washington.

8. Seven

The number of major league sports teams in Seattle. From American football to baseball to stellar women’s basketball and soccer teams, Seattle has a major league sports team for every season.
