With a strong emphasis on nature and wellness, Hyatt Regency Bali is an oasis for the modern traveller

1. Return of the legend

Opened in 1973, the Hyatt Bali Hotel was the first international five-star resort on the island. The good news is that the recent update (and renaming) has retained all the old-world Balinese charm, including guest areas designed by the father of Tropical Modernism Geoffrey Bawa and a Kerry Hill-designed teak-and-bamboo lobby.

2. At one with nature

There’s a strong sense here that nature has really taken over. The giant garden and ponds that sit adjacent to the lobby host over 500 species of flora and fauna, while the grand pool area, consisting of two adult pools and a dedicated kids pool, is surrounded by mature frangipani trees and replica stone statues that underscore Hyatt’s long history here.

3. The sunrise coast

If Bali is the island of the gods, then Sanur is where they come to feel at home. This relaxed coastal town feels less trampled than other parts of the island. Situated on the main street and on the doorstep to local restaurants, boutiques, surf and diving schools, the hotel also boasts its own 500m stretch of private beach.

4. A healing sanctuary

Taking its name from Hindu mythology, the holistic Shankha Spa, stretches across nine hectares, making it the biggest wellness facility in this part of the island. A 15m reclining statue of Ganesha sits alongside the adults-only pool and sets the tone for this serene zone. There are 10 spa villas, a sauna, a steam room and a 24-hour fitness centre alongside a kombucha bar. Treatment highlights include the Synchronised Four Hands Abhyangam massage and the immersive Watsu aqua therapy, where guests are submerged in a warm water tank (94-98 degrees Fahrenheit) before being treated to shiatsu pressure point techniques and stretching.
