What are the best ways to get to the track?
Take the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) train and alight at the stop nearest to your grandstand, then walk there. It’s the fastest, most convenient and inexpensive mode of transport. Detailed directions can be found here.
If you’re catching a cab, go with a taxi from a local company – the drivers know the best routes to get in and around the Marina Bay area. Although many roads throughout the city will be blocked, there is, however a little-known underground connection for vehicles to cross from Conrad Centennial Singapore over to The Ritz-Carlton Millennia Singapore.
What should I bring along to the event?
Wet wipes, and a local SIM card (you’ll need your passport to purchase one) from convenience stores like 7/11 for quick WiFi at the event. Bring an umbrella or disposable poncho for unexpected rain showers and make sure you have a mobile battery charger for taking plenty of photos and videos.
What are the coolest spots for catching the action?
You’d be surprised at how fun it is to position yourself at a hotel balcony overlooking the action, with the TV tuned in to the race at the same time. Mandarin Oriental is one such hotel. If you like watching the spectacular fireworks display, which comes on as the winner makes his final lap, Swissotel The Stamford offers fantastic views. For those attending the F1 concert and who want to be in close proximity to the Padang stage, the Zone 4 Padang tickets are suitable.
How do I stay comfortable and fully enjoy the event?
If you love the overall vibe of the Formula One and not just the racing then you should get your hands on the walk-about tickets that give you access to all the areas. There is an endless supply of food and drinks; I believe Heineken has some grid bars near the grand stand, so you’ll know that the party will be in the vicinity! At the Singapore Flyer, look out for Kenko Reflexology & Spa’s stand. You’ll need a good massage in-between all the different races.
How can I meet the drivers?
Probably the most underrated places to see drivers are the shopping malls. Every year, drivers from different teams will make appearances there. Look out for race simulator competitions and appearances this year in shopping malls like The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands and ION Orchard (racing superstars Nico Rosberg and Daniel Ricciardo will be making appearances there on Sept 14 and 15). These are the best ways to get really close for photos.
What’s a good way to get in the party mood for the event?
Prior to the F1 is the Ultra Music Festival (Sept 10-11), featuring Above and Beyond, Afrojack and Alesso.
What are your top F1 parties?
Most years, we hit the massive Podium Lounge party at The Ritz-Carlton Milenia Singapore. This year’s event features music stars like Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Estelle and Mark Doyle. You can also check out Boudoir Noire held at Capitol Singapore Theatre.
Which F1 concert are you looking forward to the most?
Definitely Kylie Minogue’s – she’ll spin you right round with her dance tracks, and you’ll surely know the lyrics.
Where do you like to fuel up around the event?
The Ritz Carlton’s Colony has amazing buffet lunches and dinners with spectacular spreads. For easy dining I usually hit Oscar’s in Conrad Centennial Singapore. It’s convenient and you can always find a seat. They have a great Asian menu, though I usually grab their soup and salad or a burger. Check out Millenia Walk for quick easy Japanese food – there are so many to choose from.
