Lucky draws can be near impossible to win, but one KrisFlyer member has managed to do it, twice.
Anyone who has ever taken part in a lucky draw knows how difficult it is to win prizes. That is, unless you’re Charlie Huang, who has managed to do it not just once, but twice in lucky draws run by Star Alliance over the years. In fact, Charlie has won over a million KrisFlyer miles — so how did he get so lucky?
Loyalty pays off
Charlie has been a KrisFlyer member since 1997 and has flown on Star Alliance for almost 20 years. As an avid traveller, he had plenty of inspiration when it came to taking part in a global photography competition run by Star Alliance as part of its 20th anniversary celebrations last year.
Based on the theme “Connecting People and Cultures,” Charlie submitted a photograph of one of his favourite cultural experiences, and selected KrisFlyer as his preferred Star Alliance Frequent Flyer Programme. As one of the 21 winners chosen by a panel of judges from National Geographic and The Wall Street Journal, Charlie walked away with one million KrisFlyer miles.

But this wasn’t the first time Charlie won miles in a contest. He also took part in a Star Alliance fifth year celebration and won 55,555 miles. “When Star Alliance celebrated its fifth year anniversary, I won by flying with five different Star Alliance carriers within one month,” says Charlie. “It was a lot of fun.” Clearly, a love of travel can pay off in many ways.
Maximise redemptions
As a business traveller, Charlie knows it’s important to maximise the use of his miles efficiently. He does this by redeeming one-way tickets. “Flights are generally more expensive departing from big cities such as Singapore,” he explains. “So if I make a one-way redemption out of Singapore and buy a commercial ticket back from a less popular destination, I will get to enjoy some savings.”
“One million miles is equivalent to 14 Business Class tickets from Singapore to Shanghai, or six Business Class tickets to Europe, or 66 Economy Class tickets to Jakarta on Singapore Airlines,” Charlie shared. “I have used my miles to redeem flights to Asia and Europe, and have always enjoyed the experience.”
