The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall flew from London to Gold Coast for the XXI Commonwealth Games with Singapore Airlines
In April 2018, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall flew from London with Singapore Airlines to attend the XXI Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. This was The Prince of Wales’ 16th visit to Australia and The Duchess of Cornwall’s third.
As a representative of Her Majesty the Queen, The Prince read out Her Majesty’s customary message at the Opening Ceremony of the Games, urging all athletes to unite in the spirit of friendly competition. The Prince also presented medals during the swimming finals and watched a women’s basketball match in Cairns, meeting with the teams after the game. Meanwhile, The Duchess attended and presented medals at the cycling finals.
Following their appearance at the Games, The Prince and The Duchess visited the Gold Coast and Brisbane before His Royal Highness toured North Queensland, the Northern Territory and the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu.
His engagements focused on the themes of community, sustainability and disaster recovery and resilience.
Highlights of The Prince’s engagements included visiting a coral cay on the Great Barrier Reef and stopping by the Bundaberg Rum distillery before chatting with locals about helping threatened loggerhead turtles.
