Head to these cafés for a dose of curl power
Cafes in Amsterdam have always been popular with tourists. One of the lesser-known features to look out for among tourists is the Amsterdamse krulletter, a curlicued script that graces the façades of dozens of brown cafés throughout the city. Here are a few cafes to check out if you want to have a look.
1. Café Hoppe
This august drinking den in the centre of town keeps its krulletters out of harm’s way: they’re emblazoned on the myriad ancient booze barrels behind the bar.
2. Café ’t Mannetje
The “little man” to which this characterful corner bar owes its name has also made his way onto the windows of this café, underneath the original Amsterdamse krulletters.

3. Café de Eland
After a break-in some years ago, proprietor Mark Bollen salvaged the section of glass bearing the krulletters and had it painstakingly reproduced.

4. Café De Twee Zwaantjes
The krulletters here, which incorporate the two swans of the bar’s name, are among the best-preserved in Amsterdam, according to expert Ramiro Espinoza.
5. Viscafé de Gouden Hoek
Look out for the clever krulletter sign, with curlicues incorporating some friendly looking fish painted by the Amsterdam Signpainters.
6. Proeflokaal ’t Kelkje
This new liquor dispensary serves the local tipple genever, which predates gin by years. The sign was painted by the Amsterdam Signpainters in 2016.
