One of the few pubs rebuilt after the Great Fire of London in 1666, this labyrinthine establishment is known for its literary associations. PG Wodehouse, Arthur Conan Doyle, Samuel Johnson, Mark Twain and Charles Dickens are said to have been regulars, and the latter even referred to it in A Tale of Two Cities. Sprawling across several floors, with narrow corridors, a series of small rooms and wood panelling throughout, there are few other venues in the city that evoke old-world London so perfectly.
