Because of its shallowness, the Persian Gulf was renowned as one of the world’s best spots to find pearls, and in the early 20th century the practice was an important economic engine for the region. Today, however, it exists as an enjoyable way for visitors to spend the day, a melding of history and the area’s natural beauty. Many companies offer diving tours direct from Dubai’s hotels, and though the prospect of finding a true pearl is rare, it’s still a lovely way to experience the sea.
