Nasi lemak – a Malay dish of rice cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaf, accompanied by various fixings – is one of the city’s most popular dishes. While it’s readily available at hawker centres all across the island, we also suggest sampling The Coconut Club’s pricier but utterly delicious version. What sets it apart is its fragrant Thai jasmine rice, cooked in rich coconut milk that’s laboriously hand-squeezed in-house. Order some accompanying otak-otak (grilled fish cake) and finish off your meal with a sweet, creamy bowl of cendol (jelly and red beans served in coconut milk and palm sugar syrup).
