This sprawling stretch of beach is undoubtedly the city’s most iconic landmark. Ravaged by the 2004 tsunami, the beachfront has been restored in recent years. Go early in the morning or closer to sunset to avoid the searing heat. Locals love the 13-km beach and come out in large numbers to relax with family and friends, especially on the weekends. Watch a game of cricket, have your fortune read by wandering fortune tellers or try local favourites such as roast corn on the cob and milagai bajji (long green chillies dipped in a lentil batter and deep fried). Don’t forget to look out for some fine examples of Indo-Saracenic architecture along the beach.
