Get a crash course in the architecture, crafts and culture of the southern states in DakshinaChitra, a unique heritage museum located 33 kilometres from the city. Spread over a sprawling four-hectare campus, the museum showcases some of the finest examples of traditional homes, many of which were slated for demolition. The heritage structures were bought, painstakingly dismantled and moved from their original locations and reconstructed at the museum by craftsmen from the regions where the houses originated. Walk through recreated streetscapes, interact with artisans demonstrating crafts, watch folk performances and check out exhibitions around the premises. There’s also a well-stocked store that sells a variety of handicrafts.
