Stretching approximately 1.5 kilometres along the Huangpu River, the Bund is Shanghai’s most famous waterfront promenade, offering a striking contrast between the city’s historic architecture and the futuristic Pudong skyline across the water.
On one side, a procession of 52 historic buildings spans architectural styles from Gothic and Neoclassical to Art Deco, reflecting the Bund’s past as a major financial centre. Landmarks include the Bank of China building, Peace Hotel, Customs House and former HSBC building, together forming one of Shanghai’s most distinctive architectural ensembles.
Come evening, the waterfront takes on a different character as the buildings on both sides of the Huangpu light up. For another perspective, hop aboard a Huangpu River cruise, or take the Bund Sightseeing Tunnel beneath the river, a quirky audiovisual ride illuminated by changing lights and effects.
