While about the same distance from the city as the popular Badaling section of the Great Wall, Mutianyu has fewer visitors but a greater number of watchtowers – 23 in all. An optional cable car saves a steep climb to mount the wall, and after a scenic stroll between towers, there’s the chance to race down again on a wheeled toboggan.
