Dongyue Temple

Encounter Taoist morality tales through vivid figurines

Beijing’s most spectacular Taoist temple is all about being scared into good behaviour. The consequences of your actions, good or bad, are displayed in 72 cubicles with titles such as Department for Accumulating Justifiable Wealth, and Department for Official Morality. Here, hundreds of garish figures judge, are judged and often meet with catastrophic punishment.
