An insider’s guide to Copenhagen, Denmark

Alan Hoffery, the sales and communications manager of Singapore Airlines’ Nordics office offers his tips for exploring Copenhagen

EAT

Have lunch at Bistro Royal at Kongens Nytorv, where you can sample excellent French-inspired fare. Of course, there’s also the world-famous noma – be sure to book ahead. Marchal is another Michelin-starred restaurant that offers Danish fine-dining cuisine with a French twist. For something a little more casual, try Restaurant Kompasset, where you can pair two Copenhagen classics – smørrebrød (Scandinavian open-faced sandwich) and refreshing Danish craft beer.

STAY

Located in the heart of Copenhagen is its leading hotel, d’Angleterre. Set within an iconic building dating back to the 18th century, the property boasts the only indoor pool in downtown Copenhagen. I also recommend Copenhagen Strand, a design-centric hotel that overlooks the colourful Nyhavn Harbour. It is perfectly placed for exploring the city on foot, being a five-minute walk from the bustling shopping street of Strøget.

EXPLORE

A tour of the tower at Christiansborg Palace, where the Danish parliament resides, will give you a fantastic view of the city. Do also visit Christianshavn, Denmark’s very own Venice. From taking a traditional canal tour boat to kayaking in the charming canals, the possibilities are endless when it comes to exploring this delightful spot. If you fancy a day trip out of the city, take a drive to Kronborg Castle, which served as the inspiration for Elsinore in William Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

SHOP

Browse designer goods and home décor at Illum, the city’s premium department store. Magasin du Nord is another popular shopping haven that includes a food market in the basement. For famous Danish porcelain, check out the exquisite figurines and gift items at Royal Copenhagen.

TIPS

Tourists can purchase the Copenhagen Card when they first arrive. It offers unlimited travel on public transport and free admission to museums, cruises and  castles. Don’t rely on a car or taxi to get around – Copenhagen is a city that’s best explored on foot or by bike.
