The Slow

The best spots to visit in the breezy, buzzy surf town of Canggu

With its abundance of cafés, indie boutiques and fashionable beach clubs laced around fertile green rice fields and Hindu shrines, it’s little wonder that Canggu – an up-and-coming village north of Seminyak – has become a magnet for expats and locals alike. COMO Uma Canggu’s Shambhala spa manager, Eka Purnama, gives us several insider tips for exploring his patch.

Eat

For a memorable dinner, head to boutique hotel the Slow. Its light-filled restaurant serves up lovely food that’s mostly organic and sustainable. Dishes on the menu include charred octopus served alongside garlic potatoes and pink pepper as well as burrata with orange marmalade, black olives and rocket.

Do

Canggu has a very chill vibe and a great place for relaxing is Deus Ex Machina, a custom motorcycle shop and a popular post-surf hangout; there’s also a restaurant on site.

Alternatively, take a sunset walk along the waterfront between Echo Beach and Batu Balong Beach. You’ll have amazing views of the changing sky and the rice fields. Plus, you’ll find several cute boutiques towards the end of the stretch.

Balinese temples are really special, so I’d recommend a visit to Pura Batu Mejan, which is situated about five minutes from COMO Uma Canggu. It’s one of the largest temples on the south coast of the island.

Shop

If you’re looking for simple but fun beachwear, try 69 Slam, a homegrown boutique situated near COMO Uma Canggu. Browse the racks of colourful swimwear and boardshorts, which are 100% made in Bali.
