Visiting Danang’s beachside fishing markets

A day in the life of fishermen in Danang

There are numerous fishing villages dotted along the Central Vietnamese coast but in many areas, like the beach near Tam Tien, shallow waters make it impossible for trawlers to bring the catch ashore. Instead, round basket boats are used to bring in the fish, prawns and other seafood. An army of vendors on the beach then unloads, sorts and auctions the catch to waiting buyers, in a riot of noise and activity photographed by Dylan Goldby.

Setting the scene

Just before the sun rises, the crowds descend on the beach. The backlit ocean provided a great opportunity to photograph silhouettes of the story’s characters.

Battling the elements

The crashing waves are an obstacle the round basket boat owners have to overcome as they head out to the trawlers to collect the catch. A well-timed jump takes them over the breaking swell and out into deeper waters.

A daily drill

There’s a rhythm to the chaos at a fishing village. The sea-hardened residents have been doing this for so long that what an outsider may perceive as random actions are actually all part of a well-oiled machine.

Flash sales

When a basket hits the beach, individual buyers rush to purchase the best catch at the right price (above right). It is a strangely mesmerising cacophony of shouts and bustling commotion.

Prepping for the journey

To those packing fish for a longer journey, Vietnam’s scorching temperatures are an obstacle to overcome. Ice shavers on the shore and at nearby markets provide the solution (left). This packing ice is created by dropping huge blocks of ice into noisy diesel- powered shavers.

The art of presentation

Despite the apparent chaos going on around her, one elderly lady takes time to carefully display her fish inside bamboo baskets, getting them ready for sale.

A new dawn

As the sun begins to show over the horizon, the fleet of trawlers become clearly visible. This is the target for the round basket boat owners, who ferry the night’s haul into shallower waters to trade.

The end of a good day

A boatman returns baskets to his boat after his supply of fish is auctioned off. Less than an hour into the morning, he has already made multiple trips out to the trawlers and sold everything he returned with.
