A chef’s take on Athens’ best eats and watering holes

The Gin Joint

A night on the town

There is an exceptional bar scene in Athens’ city centre, next to Syntagma Square, with several top choices such as Seven Jokers (Voulis 7) and The Gin Joint. My favourite bar here is CV Distiller (115 28, Chatzigianni Mexi 7). It has the most magical collection of whisky and rum.

Soaring sights

When I want a little escape, I visit Lycabettus Hill in Kolonaki. At the top, dotted with trees and walking paths, there is a small chapel called St George and a fine-dining venue, Orizontes Lycabettus, which offers a breathtaking view. Premiere, a rooftop restaurant at the Intercontinental Athenaeum, also provides an excellent dining experience with a superb view of the Acropolis. Its chef Jean Charles Metayer merges French elegance with Greek flavours.

Fresh off the boat

In Kallithea’s Tzitzifies precinct, Argoura tavern (Agisilaou 49-51) has a laid-back atmosphere. The chef Michail Nikos prepares a menu based on fresh catch supplied by local fishermen from the surrounding Greek islands.
