Three tips for exploring a different side to the Eternal City
Trevi Fountain? Check. The Colosseum? Check. The Vatican? Check, check and check. Head off the beaten track with these alternative activities instead.
1. Embark on an artistic treasure hunt
Sniff out paintings from 16th-century Baroque painter Caravaggio, who was renowned for his naturalistic style and dramatic use of lighting. His works adorn the following churches in Rome: San Luigi dei Francesi, Basilica of Sant’Agostino and Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo.

2. Smell the flowers
If you’re after treasures of a more botanical kind, head to the romantic Roseto Comunale at the bottom of Aventine hill. The public garden is famed for its colourful collection of roses – over a thousand varieties – which burst into bloom in May. Guided tours are usually available.

While on the topic of flowers, do also check out the Japanese garden at the Orto Botanico di Roma, especially during cherry blossom season. You’ll also find over 3,000 other species of flora throughout the rest of the 12-hectare park, such as orchids and bamboo.
