Heritage touches and a playful aesthetic feature in Soho House’s Mumbai outpost

1. A dreamy oasis

Soho House Mumbai made a splash when it opened late last year. Sitting on the Juhu beachfront, the private members’ club and hotel feels like a little bit of Miami has landed in Mumbai. From the leafy, glass-walled entrance, the ground floor channels the brand’s signature casual-chic aesthetic featuring plush couches and eclectic curios. Guests can book a room with a view on the upper floors for stunning sunset vistas.

2. Spotlight on Indian crafts

The design team, headed by Linda Boronkay, was strongly inspired by Indian culture and Mumbai. Graphic cement tiles – a throwback to heritage mansions – can be found throughout. In an effort to promote ancient Indian crafts, block-printed upholstery was sourced from Rajasthan and vintage saris were used to create artsy lampshades.

3. Rooftop glamour

Any Soho House property is incomplete without its rooftop offering. This spot has a restaurant and bar, walls covered in reclaimed wood and retractable awnings, plus a picture-perfect poolside with lush foliage and cabanas.

4. Masterpieces by South Asian artists

Art historian Kate Bryan has managed to seamlessly incorporate over 200 artworks from the subcontinent’s celebrated artists, which add character to the hotel without making it appear cluttered. Noteworthy works include stainless-steel sculptures by Subodh Gupta, mixed-media paintings from Bharti Kher and Thukral & Tagra as well as crystal and LED signage from an artist trio called the Raqs Media Collective.

5. A hub for creative minds

The hotel makes it a priority to appeal to the city’s creative community, and it curates some stellar events for this audience. Grammy-nominated music production duo Christian Rich gave a talk on how Bollywood has impacted their work, while gender non-conforming performer Alok Vaid-Menon mixed poetry, comedy and storytelling in an evocative workshop. The hotel also has a 32-seat theatre where they show pre-release movies – tickets can be booked via the member app.
