These five annual festivals have become events to plan your trips around
1. Lollapalooza (USA)
Specialising in alternative rock, metal, punk and rap, this three-day summer festival at Grant Park, Chicago, has spawned similar events in Chile and Brazil.
2. Glastonbury (UK)
The granddaddy of annual rock festivals takes place in summer on a working English farm and features the best stage acts in the world, as well as fringe concerts, theatre and dance. Tickets go on sale every October.
3. Outlook (Croatia)
The largest festival in Europe celebrating sound-system culture is held at an abandoned fort in Stinjan near the beach of Pula. It prides itself on presenting hard-core grime, techno, garage, dubstep and other electronic dance-floor music.
4. Polarjazz (Norway)
Held in the archipelago of Svalbard, halfway between mainland Norway and the North Pole, this festival draws more than 2,000 fans each February. There’s no sunlight, it’s cold, but the jazz is cool.
5. Fuji Rock (Japan)
Asia’s biggest alternative and pop music festival is at an off-season ski resort an hour from Tokyo by bullet train. It also has a camping ground and beautiful scenery.
