Key moments in the history of the Singapore Grand Prix, which takes place from 20–22 September
1. 2008
The first Formula 1-era Singapore Grand Prix is held at the brand new Marina Bay Street Circuit. It is F1’s inaugural night race.
2. 2010
Fernando Alonso beats Sebastian Vettel by just 0.293s to clinch victory – the smallest winning margin in the race to date.
3. 2013
Following feedback from the drivers, the track’s “Singapore Sling” chicane turn is replaced with a simpler and faster left-hand turn.
4. 2015
A spectator trespasses on the racetrack just as two cars speed by at almost 290km/h. He then coolly exits through a gap in the barriers and is arrested.
5. 2018
Lewis Hamilton completes a qualifying lap in just 1:36.015, which steers him to pole position and eventually the race win.
6. 2019
Drivers must now don biometric gloves that monitor their vitals. Should a crash occur, the info gets transmitted to the medical teams.
