A little slice of Ibiza just north of Phuket, party and unwind at this modernistic resort

1. Hit the decks

A contemporary escape from many of Phuket’s typically overcrowded resorts, Baba Beach Club – located 25 minutes north of the airport – is the wild little sister of the long-standing five-star Sri Panwa in the island’s south.

Managing director Vorasit “Wan” Issara, of Charn Issara Development, is passionate about all things music, and his vision with this second resort was to attract big-name DJs and develop a bona fide party scene – something he felt was missing prior to the resort’s opening last year. The music is played on Funktion-One, a British stereo system that’s popular at the hottest clubs in London, New York and Ibiza. On Saturday, 19 January, the resort will host iconic Ibiza party brand Circoloco for a one-of-a-kind festival-style party.

2. The life aquatic

Neon unicorns and waterproof beanbags float around the beach club’s central feature, a circular swim-up bar that’s been fabulously framed with a mirrored awning somewhat resembling a disco ball. Social media stars can be spotted snapping selfies on pool platforms that make it look as if they’re walking on water. An escape from the club scene can be found just a few steps away on the 200m stretch of non-built-up Natai Beach, scattered with lounge chairs and the occasional hammock.

3. Sino-Portuguese meets Shanghai Tang

The chinoiserie chic theme is apparent upon arrival, once you wander in through the moon gate walkways in reception and past bright orange ceramic garden stools and a teal antique cabinet – two colours that are subtly used throughout the restaurant and 24 villas.

The collection of luxury lodgings includes a range of villas, suites and penthouses that can all serve as a break from the action or an after-party option, as guests choose their vibe through the Smart Light system’s Welcome, Chill or Sexy settings. The cool stone floors and dark wood accents used for the bedroom interiors provide a toned-down escape from all of the poolside action.
