Domino Park at night in New York

New York’s High Line has some new competition when it comes to green, urban spaces

Set to transform the Williamsburg waterfront, the former Domino Sugar Refinery is currently the centre of an 11-acre transformation project that will see four new buildings built across the space. Once known for producing more sugar than anywhere else in the world, the old factory is a neighbourhood icon, soon to be revitalised by the new developments.

Already open to the public, Domino Park spans six-acres and is designed by James Corner Field Operations, also responsible for Manhattan’s High Line. Here are a few facts to know about New York’s latest urban open space.

1. US$3 billion

The cost of the new waterfront development where Domino Park is located, located just across the river from Manhattan’s High Line.

2. 585m2

The size of the park’s multipurpose playing field. There’s also a beach volleyball court, a Japanese pine garden, a dog run, a playground, a waterfront esplanade and multiple areas for lounging and picnicking.

3. 10,000

The estimated number of people who will visit the 2.4-hectare public space in Williamsburg on a busy weekend. The rest of the megaproject, which is set on the former site of the 4.5-hectare Domino Sugar Factory, will eventually feature four mixed-use buildings, including 700 units of affordable housing.

4. US$50million

The amount spent constructing the park by developers Two Trees Management, which purchased the site in 2012 for US$185 million. James Corner Field Operations – the landscape architects behind the High Line – took the lead on overseeing the project’s design.
