Book-lovers can travel knowing that some of their favourite cities are offering plenty of late-night reading options.
1. BookXcess, Cyberjaya, Malaysia
Less than an hour’s drive from Kuala Lumpur, this sprawling, new, 3,440m2 space for book lovers is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and boasts quiet corners, a children’s area and a cafe, making it perfect for a family outing any time of the day.
2. City Lights, San Francisco
This literary institution – which stays open until midnight – contains a treasure trove of American classics, poetry collections and bestsellers.
3. Eslite, Taipei
The chain’s Dunnan branch is the only bookstore in the city that’s open 24-hours a day, with five floors that stock a whopping collection of titles.
4. Shibuya Publishing and Booksellers, Tokyo
Serving customers until 11pm (10pm on Sundays), this indie bookstore eschews bestsellers for a well-curated selection of books and magazines.
5. Shakespseare and company, Paris
Located on Paris’ Left Bank, this revered bookstore has hosted many acclaimed authors over the years. Its doors remain open until 10pm daily.
6. Sanlian Taofen, Beijing
Opened just this April, the 24-hour, 600m² bookstore features elevated bridges that enable customers to meander through the colourful shelves.
7. The Strand, New York
The Strand stays open until 10.30pm daily. Its rare book room on the third floor (open till 6.15pm) stocks first editions and out-of-print titles.
