Get creative and make your own wares from scratch at these pottery workshops

Pottery is fast growing in popularity in Singapore, with more and more people eager to get their hands dirty creating their own bowls, vases and more. For some, it’s a tactile, therapeutic activity that soothes the soul and calms the mind; for others, it’s a practical skill worth picking up. If you’d like to try your hand at the craft, check out these top venues for pottery classes in Singapore.

1. Center Pottery Singapore

At Center Pottery’s Dragon Kiln Workshop, you’ll get to learn about the history of the studio’s 60-year-old dragon kiln before throwing clay on the potter’s wheel under the guidance of an experienced instructor. Participants will usually make two or three pieces in a single session, which they can take home after five to six weeks (after glazing and firing).
Duration: 4.5 hours
Price: S$150

2. Mud Rock Ceramics

Who better to teach the craft than the potters who made Singapore’s gift – a tea set – for Queen Elizabeth II’s 90th birthday? Mud Rock Ceramics conducts a beginner’s course that covers five basic ceramic techniques, namely coiling, slab building, throwing, trimming and glazing. Once you’ve built a solid foundation, you can progress to the advanced course, which is suitable for those who can centre, throw and lift independently.
Duration: 2.5 hours x 5 lessons
Price: S$315

3. Boon’s Pottery

Boon’s Pottery offers two courses on the essential techniques of coiling and wheel-throwing respectively. Taught by teachers from Singapore, Japan and Korea, these courses will ensure that you get the basics of pottery down pat. We advise taking the coiling course first, which is suitable for beginners, before moving on to wheel-throwing.
Duration: 3 hours x 4 lessons
Price: S$240

4. School of Clay Arts

Once you’ve mastered the basics of pottery, try An Introduction to Mould-Making & Slip-Casting at School of Clay Arts, during which you can make replicas of your favourite ceramics by creating your own plaster mould. Each workshop is limited to five students, ensuring that you’ll receive plenty of guidance.
Duration: 2 sessions
Price: S$180

5. The 8th Floor Creative Space

If you’re willing to put in the time, The 8th Floor Creative Space’s pottery course is for you. Designed by a lecturer at a local arts school, the course is conducted in two phases (focused on domestic and decorative objects respectively) and spread across 20 weeks. If that all sounds rather daunting, fret not – instructors use a monitoring system to keep track of each individual student’s progress.
Duration: 3 hours x 20 sessions
Price: S$900 (S$450 per phase)
